Freddie Mercury, Sylvia Rivera, Dusty Springfield: this book is a celebration of queer icons of the past and present and their furry feline friends. From images of lost legends such as Josephine Baker and James Baldwin, to snapshots of contemporary trailblazers like comedian Tig Notaro and fashion designer Jason Wu, these charming and eccentric photographs capture what it truly means to be a cat purr-son.

I remember the billboard for Madonna’s Reinvention Tour on Sunset Boulevard and the way the setting-sunlight would hit the billboard during cocktail hour, the rays making Madonna’s eyes flame like two rising phoenix, and I would have to pull over onto the side of Sunset, typically, almost mockingly, in front of a pop-up White Castle advertising the latest 'Harold and Kumar' film, and weep, and later, much, much later, during last-round drinks at The Abbey, or Mickeys, or maybe The Gold Coast, if it was a Tuesday night, I would see those burning phoenix again, this time behind my eyes, where they glowed like hot and sooty embers, eventually forcing me to leave The Abbey, or Mickeys, or The Gold Coast, and drive back to Sunset to stare at the billboard again in the eerie, pre-dawn silence of the Boulevard (Los Angeles is a surprisingly early town, addicted to, among many other things, its beauty sleep) but the burning-phoenix would be gone, the twin-eyes huge and dark and bottomless, filling me with a mixture of relief and dread as a lyric from one of her iconic songs started playing in my head over-and-over-and-over again, 'Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone' as I drove - finally, resolutely, home, into the hills, through the gate, up the driveway, and to my bed, where I had to put on a mellow song from back in the day, maybe by Culture Club, or the Eurythmics, or The Police, until I drifted off to sleep with the velvet sounds of Boy George, or Annie Lennox, or Sting making her lyric stop playing, like a chant, in my head, and that’s the way it was during that late summer and early fall, in West Hollywood, in Los Angeles, on the Boulevard, and in the Hills, during her Reinvention Tour.

A volume of magnificent proportions, ART + FASHION is as exciting and elegant as the creative partnerships it celebrates. Spanning numerous eras, men and women's fashion, and a wide range of art mediums, these 25 collaborative projects reveal the astonishing work that results when luminaries from the art world (such as Pollock, Haring, and Hirst) come together with icons of the fashion world (including Saint Laurent, Westwood, McQueen). From 20th-century legends such as Elsa Schiaperelli and her famous lobster dress painted by Salvador Dalí to 21st-century trailblazers such as Cindy Sherman and her self-portraits in vintage Chanel, these electric and provocative pairings—represented in lavish visuals and thoughtful essays reflecting on the history of each project—brim with the energy and possibility of powerful forces uniting.
